Camping pics

We had a good time camping with Alex’s Cub Scout pack last night. It got cold but not too cold. Two roaring fires helped. The kids went on hikes and played with flashlights in the dark and we retired two flags — a nice ceremony I had never before seen.

There is a very strict methodology to retiring a flag by fire. It has to be cut to pieces first. The field of stars is removed and then each stripe separated and kept in the correct order. As the pieces are retired into the flames, various items from our history are read: bits of the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, Kennedy’s “Ask Not…” speech, culminating in a roll call of all 50 states in the order in which they joined the union (not alphabetically, which is how I know them).

Here are some pics from the camp out. Enjoy!
