Hi Cindy. I think that's inevitable at this point, and will probably happen much faster than Amazon and Barnes & Noble and Sony would otherwise have preferred. The value of the single-function readers just won't be able to compare to a multi-function device, even if the eReaders are better in some ways.

Great post and how true! The iPad has set the bar high and you are probably right that consumers will come to expect more and more from the readers. I for one, at this point, only wish someone would make a reader that offers the same features as the Kindle and Sony Readers for a much lower price-so many folks simply cannot afford them right now at the prices asked.

That's a great point about GPS products! I hadn't thought of that, but it does fit right in with my premise.

And yes, the iPad name is rather unfortunate.

Apple set the bar high with the iphone. People have come to expect MORE out of each device they buy. The ipad (while i hate the name) builds on that premise. Another product study: Garmin or other GPS devices. At the end of 2009 I read an article about what NOT to buy...and these solely GPS devices were on the list. The argument against buying one: Why buy a single function device when you can get the same turn-by-turn navigation on your cell phone?
