Nearing the end

I’m in the home stretch of my YA fantasy novel The Sapphire Eye. Probably two more weeks to finish the first draft. There are some things I need to polish up (as there always is with a first draft of anything — duh), but I’m really happy with this thing. I think I nailed the tone of a seventeen-year-old high school girl (at least as much as a 43 year old man can do such a thing).

Over the next few days I want to talk a bit about writing in more general terms. I had a bad habit of writing overview sentences at the start of paragraphs that rendered everything that followed redundant. When I have time, I’m going to write a longer post about why lots of novice writers do this and why it can be helpful as long as you know what you’re doing (which means you usually get rid of it after you write it).
